About

Welcome to our gap year adventure.

Ann was a director at Alzheimer Society and I was a techy person at a municipality. We sold our home and set out with our backpacks in 2009. Over 12 months, we completed 21 adventures, driving to the west coast of Canada, living and volunteering in a Ghana, a safari in South Africa, caravanning in New Zealand, trekking in Nepal, walk-abouts in Australia, floating down the Mekong in Vietnam and visiting our daughter in Taiwan.

We wanted a sense of renewed excitement about life, to be away from home and the familiar, to meet new people, experience different cultures – to be travelers rather than tourists. It gave us a chance to experience life and give back, even just a little. We also figured at 52, we were still in good shape, so we wanted to take advantage of that, too.

There were lots of tears and uncertainty. But there was also excitement and that desire not to say what IF. So instead, we went for it knowing we could jump back into ‘regular’ life when we came back.
